Artist Statement

Shengqian Sun (b. 1999) is a computational artist with a background in visual communication design. She is currently based in London and studying at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her interdisciplinary practice spans installation, design, and new media, exploring the entanglement of technology, nature, and human perception. She is particularly interested in how invisible systems, data flows, algorithmic structures, and sensory signals quietly shape the way we understand and inhabit the world. Through sound, light, movement, and code, she translates abstract mechanisms into tangible experiences, creating poetic bridges between the digital and the organic. For Sun, art-making is an act of rebuilding the connection between the body and the machine, between perception and system, between technological precision and emotional sensitivity.

In Sun’s work, technology is not framed as an instrument of domination over nature but as a living extension of it, a new organ within a shared ecology. Through algorithmic visuals, sensor-driven installations, and data-responsive soundscapes, she examines how the body functions as an interface between the biological and the synthetic. The flicker of light, the vibration of sound, or the subtle movement of air may all become languages through which hidden forces speak. Rather than celebrating technological spectacle, she is drawn to the moment when machines begin to “perceive” the world, and when humans, in return, are redefined by their interaction with code. Her installations thus construct what she calls a sensory ecology, where perception becomes a shared space of negotiation between human and non-human systems.

Sun’s process is grounded in critical making, a method that merges conceptual inquiry with material experimentation. Guided by the principles of design thinking, she transforms speculative questions into interactive, embodied experiences. Many of her works begin from gestures or materials that are easily ignored in daily life; by embedding sensors and computational feedback into these fragments, she reanimates them as agents of expression. This act of reclaiming the overlooked is both poetic and political; it challenges habitual behaviours, exposes unnoticed rhythms, and revalues what society tends to label as waste or excess. Through these gestures, Sun opens a space for reflection on the energy hidden in ordinary movements and forgotten objects.

For Sun, computation is not merely a logical or functional process; it is a language of emotion and transformation. By embedding code and sensors within organic or discarded materials, she seeks to dissolve the coldness typically associated with machines. Her works invite the viewer to experience technology as something responsive, intimate, and alive. The poetics of computation she explores lies in the possibility that algorithms can feel, that data can breathe, and that digital systems can become vehicles for empathy rather than control. In this sense, her practice moves away from efficiency toward sensibility, turning digital precision into tactile, affective experience.

At the heart of Sun’s practice lies the pursuit of a sensory ecology, a way of perceiving the world where boundaries between human and non-human, natural and artificial, material and data are continuously blurred. Her installations often invite the audience to become part of the system rather than distant observers. Bodily gestures, breath, or touch are translated into real-time feedback, allowing viewers to sense their presence within the technological environment. This experience reveals both the agency and the vulnerability of human perception in an increasingly mediated world.

Sun’s work does not simply celebrate technology; instead, it examines its paradox, its ability to connect and alienate, to reveal and to obscure. By creating spaces of interaction and uncertainty, she prompts audiences to ask: when everything becomes measurable, trackable, and computational, how can we rediscover the subtle, the emotional, and the unquantifiable aspects of being?

Her artistic inquiry ultimately moves toward re-humanising digital experience. By giving warmth to machines and sensitivity to data, she imagines an alternative future in which technology becomes not an instrument of separation but a medium of empathy and coexistence. Through the intertwining of nature, computation, and the body, she seeks to awaken a more fluid, responsive, and poetic understanding of what it means to perceive and to live in the age of code.
